Fuel Monitoring and Management System On the Cards...

HIT's Technology Transfer, Licensing and Commercialisation Centre (TTLC) is working towards the commercialization and implementation of a National Fuel Monitoring and Management System, attracting the attention of the government through the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development and Ministry of Energy and Power Development.

The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Professor F. Tagwira convened a meeting with HIT Vice Chancellor Eng. Q.C Kanhukamwe, Director for Petroleum in the Ministry of Energy and Power Development Col. M. Mudzinganyama, and TTLCC Director Dr Eng. T. Garikayi to discuss the operations of the system. The meeting was also attended by the Director in the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Mrs. M. Muguti, Deputy Director Petroleum Mr. P. Muverengwi and HIT Registrar Mrs M. Samupindi.

TTLC Director Dr Eng. T. Garikayi presented the Matsimba Fuel Monitoring and Management System, an innovative product of the Institute's research and development activities that is already being tested at the Central Mechanical Equipment Department (CMED). Matsimba is a start-up running a system that tracks the movement and distribution of fuel in Zimbabwe. the system has five main components which include a card, logistics, accounting, fuel measurement and condition based maintenance. "Matsimba monitors fuel volumes at fuel depots and service stations as well as tracking the tankers distributing the product countrywide. This project can be implemented in phases but investment in the infrastructure is a prerequisite. It measures the volume of fuel in storage and vehicle tanks, tracking the movement and its distribution as well as how it is dispensed using radio signals and internet connectivity," said Dr Eng Garikayi.
