DESCRIPTION:CONCEPT NOTE \nIRIS2023: The 1st Information-Sciences Research and Innovation Symposium\nTheme: Balancing Innovation with Responsible AI Development.\nDate: 11 December 2023\nVenue: Harare Institute of Technology \nOverview \nEmerging technologies\, such as artificial intelligence\, machine learning\, big data\, and cloud computing\, are transforming every aspect of our lives\, from the way we work and communicate to the way we interact with the world around us. These technologies have the potential to accelerate national development in several ways\, from improving healthcare and education to boosting productivity and innovation. \n  \nThis symposium will provide a platform for undergraduate students in computer science\, software engineering\, information technology\, information security\, and assurance to showcase their research and innovation projects related to emerging technologies. The symposium will also feature keynote speakers from industry and academia who will share their insights on the latest trends and developments in emerging technologies and their potential impact on national development. \n  \nObjectives \nThe symposium aims to: \n\nEncourage undergraduate students to conduct research and innovation in emerging technologies.\nProvide a platform for students to share their research findings and innovations with the academic community\, industry\, and the public.\nFoster collaboration between students\, academics\, and industry stakeholders in the field of emerging technologies\nPromote awareness of the potential of emerging technologies to accelerate national development.\n\nTarget Audience \nThe symposium is open to all undergraduate students in computer science\, software engineering\, information technology\, information security\, and assurance programs at Harare Institute of Technology. \nTopics \nThe symposium will cover a wide range of topics related to emerging technologies\, including but not limited to: \n\nArtificial Intelligence\nMachine Learning\nData Science\nCybersecurity\nBlockchain\nCloud Computing\nInternet of Things (IoT)\nBig Data\nArtificial Intelligence for social good\nEmerging technologies for sustainable development\n\n  \nCall for Papers \nUndergraduate students are invited to submit abstracts of their research and innovation projects related to emerging technologies. Abstracts should be 300 words or less and clearly state the research topic\, objectives\, methodology\, and expected results. Abstracts should be submitted to iris@hit.ac.zw by 19 November 2023. \n  \nSelection Process \nA panel of experts from academia and industry will review the submitted abstracts and select the top papers for presentation at the symposium. Selected authors will be notified by 1 December 2023. \n  \nKeynote Speakers \nThe symposium will feature keynote speakers from industry and academia who will share their insights on the latest trends and developments in emerging technologies and their potential impact on national development. \n  \nRegistration \nRegistration for the symposium will be free and open to all undergraduate students\, academics\, and industry stakeholders. Registration will open from 9 -10 December 2023. \n  \nPresentation Format \nSelected papers will be presented in a poster session or oral presentation format. Poster presenters will have the opportunity to display their posters and discuss their research with attendees. Oral presenters will have 15 minutes to present their research\, followed by a 5-minute question-and-answer session. \nAwards\nThe top-ranked presenters will receive monetary prizes of a total value of $600 and Staff Development Fellowships. \nSponsorship\nThe symposium is seeking sponsors to help cover the costs of the event.
