The Global Entreprenuership Training (GET) 2016 in Zimbabwe Culture Night in Pictures

It was a night to remember as HIT students, participants to the GET Summit and counterparts from the Handong Global University came together to celebrate the Zimbabwean and South Korean cultures.

Zimbabwe's mbira maestro and Kora award nominee, Hope Masike gave a titillating performance, with a narrative of Zimbabwean culture from a musical perspective.

Chaplain of the HIT, Commissioner S.Mungate opened the proccedings with the Institute prayer, which was closely followed by the HIT Song, performed by the Institute Choir. A group of GET participants sang and danced to popular Zimbabwean music genre, JIT; followed by a short play on the Zimbabwean traditional marriage ceremony.

Professor George Kim of the Handong Global University serenaded guests with a Harmonica performance of popular American folk song, Oh Sussana, while the HGU volunteers amazed the crowd with the signature Korean Fan dance. HGU Volunteers again took to the stage, with Taekwondo moves.

Hope Masike emerged on stage and provided the audience with a repertoire of Zimbabwean traditional music from the pre-colonial to colonial, to independent Zimbabwe. She imparted, through a series of short didactic sessions, the emergence of various folklore, dances and song and their significance in the lives of the Zimbabwean people. From the celebratory mbakumba dance, to the Chinambera which celebrated a good hunt, the rain making dance, Mhande, chokoto for playful dating to the songs of the liberation struggle such as Hondo, Zvichapera Riini?, Chemutengure and the songs of celebration at Zimbabwe's independence from British colonial rule in 1980.

The students from South Sudan made performances of cultural dances from their motherland; describing their country as the ‘newest nation in the world.' The group expressed their appreciation to the Harare Institute of Technology for "allowing us to practice our culture, something we have fought for in one of the longest civil wars in Africa."

HIT students gave the last performance with an exciting display of the evolution of music in Zimbabwe, with contemporary and urban hits as part of their selection. The proccedings ended with the HIT song, which brought the whole house together in a celebratory mood, with the encompassing spirit of unity and oneness.

The Culture Night was held as part of the entertainment for the Global Entrpreneurship Summit which took place at the HIT from 25 January to 2 February.
