HIT Scoops Second Runner Up Prize at POTRAZ HackathonThe HIT team scooped the Second Runners-Up Prize at the inaugural Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) Hack4 Sustainable Smart Cities for in Most Creative Smart City ideas category, walking away with $3 000 each and $500 000 for the HIT Innovation Hub, of which $200,000 is to be used for further development of the project.

The HIT team is comprised of three students who are currently working within the Technology Transfer, Licensing & Commercialisation Centre (TTLCC), the Harare Institute of Technology’s Innovation Hub. Learnmore Ndlovu is a 4th year Information Technology student, while Theophilus Okoye and Kudakwashe Paradzayi are 3rd Software Engineering students. The team pitched the Lifeline Medical, a health application that has two modules comprising a Medical Record Storage and Medical Statistics Analysis. The Medical Record Storage module keeps track of patients’ medical history and also facilitates record keeping of their relatives. The Medical Statistics module uses the information that has been gathered from the Medical Record Storage to predict possible disease outbreaks.

Lifeline Medical is set to improve local healthcare. The database compiles accurate statistics of diseases affecting citizens along with storing health records for citizens.

Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) walked away with the first prize winning a million dollars for the university’s, while the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) were the first runners up getting $700 000.

The Hack4 Sustainable Smart Cities is part of POTRAZ’s innovation drive.
