ZUSA GAMES KICK OFF IN HARARE, FOCUSING ON STUDENT WELL-BEING

The 2025 Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (ZUSA) Cluster 1 Games were officially launched today at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), with a strong emphasis on promoting student health and well-being. The ZUSA Cluster 1 Games, are running under the theme “University Sport, Developing Drug Free Champions!!” kicked off from 1 – 3 May 2025, and are set to feature intense competition across various sporting disciplines.
The opening ceremony, attended by a large crowd of students and university officials, saw the official launch presided over by the ZUSA Patron, Professor V.N. Muzvidziwa, Vice Chancellor of Midlands State University (MSU). Professor Muzvidziwa, the Guest of Honour, highlighted the crucial role of the games in tackling drug and substance abuse among university students.
“These games are not just about athletic competition,” Professor Muzvidziwa stated. “They are also a vital platform for fostering healthy habits, promoting mental well-being, and developing future sporting champions for our nation and the world at large. We hope that through participation in these activities, they will develop a holistic understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and become future world champions,” he said.
Hosted by the Harare Institute of Technology, have attracted over 1,000 participants from 16 local universities. The ZUSA Games have become a significant annual event, providing a platform for universities to showcase their sporting prowess and fostering camaraderie amongst students.
The opening ceremony saw a vibrant display of student spirit, with teams from participating institutions showcasing their colours and enthusiasm. Competitions in various sports, including football, athletics, paralympics, cricket, table tennis and chess, are scheduled throughout the event.
The ZUSA Cluster 1 Games are a cornerstone of the ZUSA national programme, designed to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play among university students. The focus on student health and well-being, as articulated by Professor Muzvidziwa, adds another layer of significance to this year’s event.
The participating athletes and officials also took their oaths at the official opening ceremony.
