Zambeze University (UniZambeze) of Zambia and the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) have formalised their commitment to academic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 22 May 2025. The agreement was officially signed by the Vice-Chancellors of both institutions, marking a significant step towards fostering deeper cooperation and mutual development.
The MoU outlines a broad framework for collaboration across various academic and research areas. Subject to mutual consent and appropriate conditions, both universities have agreed to explore joint programmes offered at either institution, aiming to enhance educational opportunities and institutional growth. These collaborative efforts include the exchange of faculty members and technical staff, enabling knowledge sharing and capacity building.
Students from both universities—undergraduate and postgraduate—will have opportunities for exchange programmes, enriching their academic experience and fostering cross-cultural understanding. Additionally, the partnership encourages joint supervision of PhD and MSc students, with faculty members providing major and co-supervisory roles to support advanced research projects.
Research is a key focus of the MoU, with provisions for joint publication of research findings and participation in proposal development for collaborative projects. Both institutions also aim to conduct joint research activities, participate in seminars, and hold academic meetings to promote scholarly dialogue.
“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to academic excellence and innovation,” said the HIT Vice Chancellor, Professor Quinton Chamunorwa Kanhukamwe. “By working together, we can expand our research capabilities, improve our educational offerings, and contribute meaningfully to the development of our region.”
The agreement is expected to strengthen the ties between Zambia and Zimbabwe’s higher education sectors, fostering a collaborative environment that benefits students, staff, and the broader academic community. Both universities anticipate that this MoU will pave the way for numerous joint initiatives and long-term partnerships.
