The Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) has achieved a significant milestone in engineering and technical industrial training after being officially accredited by the Canada Welding Bureau Group to test and certify welders to the stringent requirements of the CSA Standard W47.1.
The accreditation, formally granted in December 2025, recognises HIT’s state-of-the-art facilities, rigorous training protocols, and commitment to producing welders who meet internationally recognised standards of safety and quality.
The CSA W47.1 standard is a critical certification within the welding industry, particularly in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and energy. Achieving this accreditation positions HIT as a leading institution in Africa for welding technology and certification, ensuring our graduates are competitive both locally and on the global stage.
Currently, Zimbabwe is importing skilled welders for its projects in mining, construction, mining and manufacturing.
The certification will empower our students and persons interested in pursuing welding as a profession with credentials that carry weight worldwide.
HIT students in relevant engineering and technology disciplines and members of the public will have direct access to certified welder testing on campus, while graduates will carry a portable credential recognised across international markets, boosting employability. Local, regional and international industries can now rely on HIT as an accredited centre for qualifying skilled welders, ensuring compliance with international construction and fabrication codes.
This accomplishment aligns with the national and with HIT’s strategic vision to avail advanced technical skills to support Zimbabwe’s industrial growth, and foster innovation through globally benchmarked standards.
